Faculty-led 101 is a handbook for effectively conceiving, developing, and executing study abroad courses and programs. It is designed for college professors, but may also be useful to high school teachers, study abroad advisors, and others who are involved in leading student groups abroad. Use it to develop your study abroad program to its fullest potential. If you don't find the information you need, simply email us and we'll find it for you.

Faculty-led programs are different than other study abroad opportunities; while labor-intensive, they offer unique benefits. First, a knowledgeable and experienced professor takes the lead. Through excellent teaching and mentoring, and by carefully weaving subject matter into the international location and culture, students are guided through a learning experience that cannot be replicated in a classroom or achieved by a single person traveling alone. The professor is more than a teacher, but a guide, resource, and friend. Together as a group, faculty and students share in a journey unlike any other.

A faculty-led program is essentially a department and university abroad. Everyone who comes in contact with the program gets a sense of the university and everyone who participates in the program learns a great deal about themselves and the world around them. More than a structured opportunity for young people and students who are not well-traveled, faculty-led courses bond personal growth and development with strong academic learning. Faculty-led courses may also be specialized and unique in subject matter. This format allows students to understudy a well-traveled professor and glean from his/her knowledge and expertise abroad.

Faculty-led programs are not only beneficial to the students, but also to professors who lead them. International experience is very attractive to colleges and universities. By having global experience, coupled with the knowledge and expertise necessary to lead study abroad courses and other groups abroad, you set yourself apart from the competition and increase your chances of securing an excellent faculty position, tenure, and/or promotion in your field.
